First order
An email enquiry via the website asking if I could make wooden spoons was the start of this adventure. Looking at the spoons we had at home, I sorted out that the handle would need turning first, then the bowl would have to be shaped by hand using carving gouges and my range of sanders.
Kitchen utensils of this sort are normally made from beech which I have in stock. The client provided photographs of the original spoon to be replicated and the rough shape was cut out of a large board using the jigsaw.
Turning the handle was straight forward and initial carving of the spoon bowl went well. Shaping the outside of the bowl involved my belt sander, then the bobbin sander, but sanding the inside of the bowl proved more difficult. I then remembered my Arbortech contour sander. A random orbital sander about 50mm in diameter.
This tiny ROS was brilliant for the final shaping of the bowl, a slightly flexible head allowed me to get access to all the curved surfaces and gave a lovely finish.
More spoons
Having completed the first spoon order, I was showing another client some images of work I had completed. This lady wanted a table restoration among other things, but when she saw the spoon images she become very excited and asked if I could make a replacement for her much used porridge spoon.
The spoon had a very small bowl but a long handle. She had found small bowl spoons, but none had the correct length of handle.
As before, turned the handle on the lathe, a bit of hand carving to form the bowl then sanding to shape the outside and the small Arbortech sander to finish the inside.
The small sander is fantastic for jobs of this sort. Very expensive to buy, but like the rest of the range is a pleasure to use.
