Having made the sheep roll holder and made a smaller version as a rabbit. Sheila and I decided to have a good look round to see if any other designs could be developed.
I had seen images of small turned mice, which I thought could be added to the top of the central post. Sheila then found some two colour hedgehogs. Again a small turned item.
A more modern design was a spiral of timber forming a cover round most of the roll. I had some bendy ply offcuts from the big bookcase I had made so they were pulled out from the wood pile.
The original chicken and duck drawings were pulled out of the design folder and we also managed to find a dwarf to stand on the stick, with a door attached to the base.
From standard roll dimensions, bases were cut from 30mm staved beech worktop, stems were cut from a 2.4metre length of 28mm diameter dowel and a threaded attachment fitted in to the top end so the figures could be interchangeable.
Making and adjusting
The spiral was a fixed item. I was surprised I managed to bend it round a 140mm diameter base. A central rod was added to complete the design. It will be interesting to see what customer feedback we get.
The dwarf again was a fixed design. The base having a flat to allow attachment of the gothic door, but still allowing the roll to rotate. A barrel stave offcut was used to form the door and door surround.
The duck neck was shaped, and to make it look right, the stem was shortened to give the appearance of the ducks head coming out of the centre of the roll.
The mouse, hedgehog and chicken were all fitted to a standard length stem, but I had to add a stainless steel screw cup under the chicken to save it catching and stopping rotation of the kitchen roll.
Having got a standard design for base and stem, the next stage is to develop interchangeable tops. Perhaps seasonal items, snow men, Christmas trees are a possibility, but I am open to suggestions.
